Prof Dr Moshe Zimmermann will give this year's Carlebach Lecture entitled “Hammonia and Hatikva: German-Jewish history with a focus on Hamburg”. Zimmermann, born in Jerusalem in 1943, is Professor Emeritus of History at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His research centres on the history of antisemitism and nationalism. Until 2012, he headed the Richard Koebner Minerva Centre for German History at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is the author of numerous books, including “Wende in Israel” (1996) and “Die Angst vor dem Frieden” (2010), in which he passionately advocates the two-state solution. His most recent book “Niemals Frieden? Israel at the Crossroads” (2024) was nominated for the German Non-Fiction Prize.

The Carlebach Lecture is organised by the Joseph Carlebach Arbeitskreis. Since its foundation in 1991, it has promoted exchange and academic cooperation between Germany and Israel, particularly in the field of German-Jewish history and culture as well as German-Israeli relations. The Carlebach Lecture 2025 is being organised with the kind support of the Senatskanzlei.

The Carlebach Lecture 2025 will take place on Wednesday, 25 June 2025 at 19:00 (s.t.) in the Warburg-Haus.
