The documentary film “Henny: A Legacy of Hope” traces the moving life of Henny Simon (1925–2017). It focuses on her memories of the Holocaust, her time in Hanover during the war and afterwards as a “displaced person”, her emigration to the USA, and her later visits to Germany. The film highlights the connection between Hanover’s engagement with its Jewish history and culture of remembrance, Henny’s own life story, and their shared commitment to responsible remembrance. It also highlights her strong commitment, particularly in schools, to discussing the importance of remembrance and the consequences of hatred and racism. Through emotional imagery, historical footage and sensitive re-enactments, the film weaves personal experiences with the question of how people and societies can learn from the shadows of the past.
