NDR report featuring Dr Beate Meyer
On 21 October 2026, the Hamburg Stumbling Stone Initiative celebrated its 20th anniversary. In 2006, Dr Beate Meyer, then a research fellow at the Institute for the History of German Jews, and Dr Rita Bake, then deputy director of the State Agency for Civic Education, brought together volunteers from across Hamburg. They wanted to supplement the sparse inscriptions on the Stumbling Stones with life stories. Since then, biographies have been researched and published for almost 5,500 of the more than 7,500 Stolpersteine in Hamburg. On 21 October, as part of an event at the Kunstklinik Eppendorf, the history of this project was looked back upon.
The NDR broadcasted a feature on the origins of the Hamburg Stolperstein initiative on 20 October 2026 in the Hamburg-Journal.
