Conference and Public Event to celebrate the Institute’s Anniversary
The IGdJ is taking its 60th anniversary as an opportunity to discuss Jewish history and culture in the context of new questions and methods, based on the Institute's current research profile. The conference “The IGdJ at 60: German-Jewish History in New Contexts” will take place from 19 to 20 May at the Institute. Conference sections take a legal history perspective on Jewish experiences of violence and the Holocaust, examine the profound influences of the past and present, address challenges in and for Digital Jewish History, and analyse the conditions of international migration movements as well as the formations and conflicts of multiple self-conceptions.
The conference also addresses ongoing projects and discussions in Hamburg that have an impact beyond academia and into society at large. Excursions to the Grindel quarter and to the newly opened exhibition “Landmarks of Jewish History” at the Altonaer Museum are planned.
The conference includes the public evening event: Sources, data, contexts – A website for the virtual consolidation of a shared archive, to be held on 19 May 2026 at 6.30 pm at the artrium (Lichthof) at Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Hamburg, Von-Melle-Park 3, 20146 Hamburg.
We cordially invite you to the festive launch of a website that was developed at the IGdJ to accompany two digitisation projects at the Hamburg State Archives and the Jerusalem Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People. Both institutions preserve the (divided) archives of the Jewish communities in Hamburg. The history of the division is closely linked to the founding history of the IGdJ. The evening will feature three keynote speeches and a discussion with the participating archives, which will examine issues surrounding the digitisation of source material from different perspectives and address the challenges and potential of this specific digitisation project.
The detailed program of the events will shortly be published here.
