Dr. Kim Wünschmann contributes to new ZDF documentary

January 27 marks the eightieth anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp by the Red Army in 1945. To mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, ZDFinfo is broadcasting the new documentary series “Auschwitz – Überleben in der Hölle” with a contribution of Dr. Kim Wünschmann. The documentary is available in the ZDF Mediathek until January 2027.

In 1940, the SS set up the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland. In 1941, they murdered hundreds of prisoners of war there for the first time using poison gas. It was the prelude to mass murder. Over the course of three episodes, the documentary tells the stories of victims and perpetrators of the death factory whose paths crossed in Auschwitz. They include prisoners who fought for survival and perpetrators such as the camp doctor Josef Mengele, who carried out experiments on prisoners.

99-year-old Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who grew up in Breslau and experienced persecution there, tells of her imprisonment in Auschwitz. Together with her sister, she had to do forced labor in a factory. In December 1943, the National Socialists deported her to Auschwitz.
