New publication by Jana Matthies M.A.
The memorial on Bornplatz, the museumisation of Hamburg's Jewish city history, and the Senate's visitor programme for former Jewish citizens – these topics were already the subject of heated debate in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time, the Hamburg alumni associations in Israel spoke out. Their members and protagonists had fled Nazi persecution in the 1930s and, fifty years later, joined forces as former Hamburg residents. Over the years, their associations developed into committed communities of remembrance that served as social gathering places in Israel and looked to Hamburg with great interest. They worked across borders, creating spaces for (re)rapprochement between the Federal Republic of Germany and Israel.
With her study on former Jewish residents of Hamburg, Jana Matthies has now presented the first individual study on a German-speaking alumni association in Israel. It was made possible thanks to financial support from the Carlebach Fund of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg at the IGdJ, the Kurt and Hildegard Löwenstein/Losten Foundation and the Galewski Foundation.
