New Publication by Dr. Björn Siegel Released

The newly published volume “The Drunken Diana” between Trieste and Palestine by Dr. Björn Siegel brings the ship into focus as a distinctive site in the Jewish migration history to Palestine between 1918 and 1938. Drawing on selected diaries, memoirs, newspapers, advertising brochures, as well as photographs and literary testimonies, the book offers illuminating snapshots of the maritime space and its significance.

Herbert Friedenthal’s novella “The Drunken Diana” – which is also reprinted in the second part of the book – serves as the starting point for the study’s reflections. It stands as a representative example of the diverse range of sources that make visible the maritime sphere, its specific conditions, and the various processes and experiences of the period.

The book is based on the keynote lecture that Dr. Björn Siegel delivered in 2022 during his visiting professorship at the Centre for Jewish Studies (CJS) at the University of Graz, and which he was able to expand for publication, including, among other materials, Herbert Friedenthal’s manuscript. Special thanks are due to Prof. Dr. Michael Freeden, the son of Herbert Friedenthal, as well as to Univ.-Prof. Dr. Gerald Lamprecht and the teams at the CJS and Clio Publishing.
