Now Available in the Online Picture Database
Following last year’s publication of the catalogue Family Photographs | Family Histories by Dr. Anna Menny, Dr. Björn Siegel and Lisa Bortels, which offered new insights into the visual heritage and stories of a total of 17 families, the image collections made available as part of the project can now also be accessed in our online picture database Bildarchiv jüdische Geschichte & Gegenwart [Jewish History & Present].
The photographs depict everyday life in Hamburg up to the families’ flight from Nazi Germany, their new beginnings in often unfamiliar countries, practices of remembrance and commemoration within the families, and family life in the present day.
By making the family albums available online, the visibility and accessibility of these important (family-historical) sources for research and the general public are significantly enhanced. At the same time, this marks the successful completion of the project Visualizing the Past – Creating the Future, funded by the Ministry of Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
