Dr. Kim Wünschmann contributes to new arte documentary
To commemorate the November pogroms of 1938, arte is showing a new documentary in which Dr. Kim Wünschmann also participates. Entitled “La Nuit de Cristal – Les Pogroms de Novembre” (Kristallnacht – November Pogroms 1938), the two-part film by Marie-Pierre Camus and Guillaume Vincent is now available to view online.
The violent events during the night of 9 to 10 November 1938, when members of the NSDAP, SA, SS, Hitler Youth, and others abused and killed Jewish women, men, and children, broke into their homes, stole their property, destroyed businesses, and set synagogues on fire, are set in the larger context of Nazi persecution. The year 1938 is considered a key year: a flood of discriminatory laws and regulations, the violence following the annexation of Austria, the mass arrests as part of the so-called Aktion Arbeitsscheu Reich and the increasing disenfranchisement and discrimination exacerbated the living conditions of the Jewish population. The November pogroms marked the preliminary climax of this development.
