Project „Visualizing the Past – Creating the Future“
The photo catalogue "Familienfotos | Familiengeschichten", realized as part of the project “Visualizing the Past – Creating the Future” funded by the Authority for Culture and Media of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, has been published.
The catalogue presents photos from nearly 20 family and private collections that illuminate family life in Hamburg up to the 1930s, as well as the flight and new beginnings in exile. Recent photographs and quotes illustrate the relevance of these stories to the present day. This compilation of mostly unpublished images offers various perspectives on Hamburg's (Jewish) history.
The photo catalogue aims to fulfill the families' desire to (re-)inscribe their narratives in Hamburg's collective memory, while simultaneously providing important sources on the city and family histories for research and ensuring their preservation for future generations.
