Conference in Stuttgart-Hohenheim 14 - 16 February 2025
Conference of the Interdisciplinary Forum for Jewish History and Culture in the Early Modern Period
From 14 to 16 February 2025, the conference Digital in die jüdische Frühe Neuzeit took place in Stuttgart-Hohenheim. The IGdJ was involved in the conference through active participation and as a funding partner. The aim of the conference was to discuss how established digital formats can be transferred to projects on the early modern Jewish period and to look at possible special features and challenges.
Various digital mediation formats were presented over the two days of the conference, including digital editions, native apps, web applications, digital (educational) games and immersive technologies such as virtual reality. The presentations and discussions also addressed the interdisciplinary intersections between the humanities, digital humanities, computer science and different levels of mediation. The invited experts also addressed questions of methodology, the sustainable use of data and the relationship between form and content. Dr. Anna Menny and Dr. Björn Siegel from the IGdJ addressed these aspects in greater depth in their contributions to the digital source edition of Key Documents on German-Jewish history and the podcast Jüdische Geschichte Kompakt.
The conference offered valuable insights into current developments and showed not only how digital formats can enrich the transfer of knowledge, but also how these outreach formats change the process of acquiring knowledge and engaging with history. It also became clear that interdisciplinary cooperation, sustainable financial support for infrastructure, a high degree of networking and a critical discussion of basic ideas and target groups are crucial for the success of such innovative projects.
