Graphic History among the journal’s Christmas recommendations 2025

Geschichte der Gegenwart, the online magazine for contributions from the humanities and cultural sciences, dealt with the relationship between storytelling and political reality in the year 2025, which is now coming to an end. Among the GdG's Christmas recommendations is the Graphic History “Oberbrechen: A German Village Confronts Its Nazi Past”, co-written by Dr. Stefanie Fischer (TU Berlin) and Dr. Kim Wünschmann with the artist Liz Clarke.

The review states: “Vividly and with great empathy and reflection, the volume reveals many aspects of German-Jewish history that are less known to the general public: for example, the close intertwining of Jewish and non-Jewish life in rural areas, where Jews were an integral part of the village community in many places before 1933, for example as cattle dealers and breeders ...”

“This ‘graphic history’ not only tells a forgotten, transnationally intertwined local story—it also, as good research does, reveals methodological problems and blind spots by making the two historians protagonists of the illustrated narrative and providing insights into their own approaches to the topic, the challenges of archival work, and their interactions with contemporary witnesses.”
