Josefine Langer Shohat M.A. analyses Discussions and Findings

In May 2026, the Institute for the History of the German Jews marked the 60th anniversary of its founding by hosting the conference ‘The IGdJ at 60: German-Jewish History in New Contexts’ in Hamburg. Based on the Institute’s current research profile, Jewish history and culture were discussed using innovative questions and methods. The conference programme is available here.

The detailed report on the international conference, authored by Josefine Langer Shohat M.A., has now been published on the H-Soz-Kult platform. Langer Shohat analyses the content and findings of the conference, which discussed new research on legal history and migration history, contemporary Jewish studies and Digital Jewish History.

In summary, the report states: ‘The conference demonstrated that German-Jewish history is a vibrant field of research which, on the one hand, takes historical Jewish actors seriously, thereby enabling a nuanced view of history, and, on the other hand, is capable of engaging with current debates and is thus of relevance beyond academia. Halfway to its 120th anniversary, the IGdJ is ideally positioned to mark its 60th anniversary.’
