Dr. Sonja Dickow-Rotter

Sonja Dickow-Rotter has been an academic staff member at the IGdJ since 2019. She studied literature and cultural anthropology at the University of Hamburg. After completing her master's degree, she worked as a research assistant at the Walter A. Berendsohn Research Center for Exile Literature and at the Universitätskolleg at the University of Hamburg, among other positions. Sonja Dickow-Rotter wrote her doctoral dissertation on literary configurations of house and home in contemporary Jewish literatures. Her comparative dissertation, which was awarded the University of Hamburg's Joseph Carlebach Prize in 2021, was written at the University of Hamburg and at the Daʼat Hamakom: Center for the Study of Cultures of Place in the Modern Jewish World (Hebrew University of Jerusalem). She has been involved in archival projects in Jerusalem and Hamburg and has worked in the cultural sector, including for the Jüdischer Salon am Grindel e. V. Sonja Dickow-Rotter is an alumna of the Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Scholarship Fund.

From 2019 to 2023, Sonja Dickow-Rotter worked as a project staff member of the online source edition Hamburger Schlüsseldokumente zur deutsch-jüdischen Geschichte (Key Documents on German-Jewish History). In this context, she also conceptualized and implemented online exhibitions as well as other digital formats and coordinated the revision of the digital Bilddatenbank ‘Jüdische Geschichte’ (‘Jewish History’ Image Database) and the reference work entitled Das Jüdische Hamburg (Jewish Hamburg) as well. Sonja Dickow-Rotter's main focus is on digital history and project coordination at the interface of research and education. On the other hand, she is interested in interdisciplinary perspectives on Jewish history and culture. Since 2023, she is working together with Dipl.-Ing. Mirko Przystawik on a tandem project on the dialogue between architecture and literature (DFG-Priority Program 2357 "Jewish Cultural Heritage"). Her research interests as a literary scholar include Jewish literature, German-language Jewish exile literature, cultural studies concepts of space, and trauma theories.
